This is Rapidan's Mark Twain, CGC, "Huckleberry". Huck was a
beautiful boy, our first Ridgie, and we adored him. The Show Photo is
of Huck at 5 years of age. Huck's dam is CH. Rakiara Rapidan Ricochet,
and thru her Huck is half-brother to CH. Rakiara's Stuntman, sire of
Sienna's Fire and Rain, pictured elsewhere on our site. Huck's sire is
CH. Mshindaji Rahashi of Kushinda, JC. The candid photo's were taken on Huck's 10th birthday. What a
grand old dog he was.
You are never too old and it's almost never too late !!! On Sept
14th, 2002 Huck earned his Canine Good Citizen certificate. The
amazing thing is this: Huck learned obedience when he was a puppy --
less than a year old. All we had done thru the years was simply USE
obedience in everyday life. When he was 10 years old, I decided he
needed an outing, and took him to a 2 hour obedience refresher course.
He had a blast and was the star pupil. He remembered everything.
So on Sept 14th at the Lab Fun Day, I pulled him out of his afternoon
nap and asked him to do all the 10 CGC Test Items. He drew a crowd to
cheer him on, and Huckleberry was wonderful. He 'sashayed on over' to
me on the 'come', and sat quietly during the distractions, not even
trying to chase the wheels ! During the walking thru the crowd, there
were several people whose 'credentials' he wanted to verify, but he
politely walked by my side. In the end, of course I cried and cried,
and Huck just wondered what the fuss was all about -- 'of course I can
do this stuff, Mom' was what he said.
What A Grand Old Dog !!! Bless your heart, Huck. A memory I will long
...... cherish.
Huck surveys his kingdom on his 10th birthday
Huck shows off that great Ridgeback conformation, even at age 10 years

We are sad to report that one month after he earned his CGC,
Huckleberry joined his niece, Suzan in the great Ridgeback Hunting
Grounds in the sky. He went quietly after a short but losing battle
with congestive heart failure. Huck was 11 1/2 years old, A grand and
wonderful friend and companion who shared his kisses and cuddles to
the end. He will be sorely missed. We think of him doing the things he
loved to do -- chasing deer and rabbits in between periods of serious
sleeping on the sofa..... We have so many wonderful memories. Good-bye
to a true friend. |
