Hawkeye Stories That miraculous birth: Marti's mother was in the ER in Charlotte NC when Jasmine was due to deliver her first litter. While Mom was having her new pacemaker implanted, Jasmine's temperature dropped. Marti headed home -- a 2 hour drive -- to Galax. Jasmine waited as long as she could. When Marti was 30 minutes away, the cell rang. Andy said, "I see a puppy tail" but no birth happened. 30 long minutes later when Marti got home, Jasmine pushed in earnest and a gorgeous male puppy came out tail first, and he squealed. We were so sure he would not breathe ... at least 30 minutes with no oxygen, no umbilical, no sack ... and yet he was just fine. Hawkeye and Jasmine waited for me to be there to attend the birth. That name: When that miraculous gorgeous male puppy was born, I immediately said, 'Oh, Andy, Look at that boy.' And he said, 'if he doesn't work out, that's the last darn male we will ever keep.' So instead of the 'knight' name I had picked out for him .. that boy became 'Last of the Mohicans.' I love the book and the movie, and had to call him, what else? Hawkeye. To keep that theme going, we named the female we kept a Native sounding name ... Steals-The-Thunder ... and called her 'Tango'.... Our first Hawkeye son we named Native-Sun 'Nate', and Tango's daughter we named Indian-Summer-Song 'Melody'. His patience with sister Tango: As puppies, Hawkeye and Tango were raised together. She was absolutely relentless in her harassment of Hawkeye. Tugging his ears, pushing him with her nose, chewing on his tail, laying on top of him ... you name it, she did it to poor Hawkeye. He never growled at her, never bit at her, never bullied her even tho he was always bigger than she was. From this early stage we knew what a marvelous temperament he had ! The toy, the ever-present ball toy: Hawkeye always came out of his kennel run like a rocket, tail wagging furiously, to fly around the yard, looking for the ball toy. As soon as he had it, Hawkeye would bring it to us, dump it at our feet, asking for us to throw it. He would retrieve that ball toy seemingly forever. Neither of us ever got him to slow down or stop asking for a throw. Often if we had to scoop the yard, he would get in front of us in our way, and then drop the toy at our feet, always polite, always saying "it's better to play than to work .. come on, play with me!" I swear he was smiling at us as he wagged his tail and looked eagerly at the ball toy. Often he would take a paw and touch the ground just at the ball toy to make sure we knew that's what he wanted, as if we couldn't guess, right? The funniest thing he ever did was to bring the ball toy, and just as I put the scoop into action, he put the ball toy very gently into the scoop ! I laughed so hard I cried .... Hawkeye's message was clear -- 'to hec with work ! let's play'. What a happy happy boy he always was. I see you, mom! bark: Every time Marti went out of the house, Hawkeye would give her a special bark. It was always the same, and it was very unambiguous in its meaning -- 'I See You, Mom!' 'Here I Am, Mom' was what he was saying. Hawkeye made it very clear from the day his eyes opened that he was Marti's dog. There was a very very special bond between us, we didn't need commands or language to communicate, simply just to BE together was enough. We read each other's body language perfectly, and enjoyed so many wonderful times ... training as a puppy, matches, obedience classes and CGC's [Hawkeye was my CGC demo dog], and dog shows. Hawkeye was so willing to do anything I asked him, wanting to please me and be with me. He always watched for me and watched me when we were together, always ready, always asking 'what's next?' No more crates, please! The UKC used to hold its Carolina Classic at the Piedmont Kennel Club grounds in February of each year. In 2004, the weather turned nasty, there were several inches of snow, and the temps dropped into the teens. When we left home, the weather was much warmer in the mountains ! and no snow was predicted. So the dogs -- Hawkeye, Joker, Martin -- had to spend lots of time in their crates in the show building and in the van. We took turns sleeping with the dogs in the van and running the engine every hour for a while to keep the dogs warm enough since no dogs were allowed in the hotel rooms. What a weekend! Anyway, after that weekend, Hawkeye asked NOT to be in a crate again, and who could blame him? So he never went to a crate again. The freak injury: Hawkeye was injured in January of 2009 in a freak kennel accident when his litter sister, Anna, jumped on top of him when he was under their pipe bed. The xrays showed a dog who should not even be able to walk, but yet he did. The specialists could offer no treatment to fix his injury. Hawkeye gave us 3 gorgeous litters after that accident, too. He continued to thrive with acupuncture and meds until October 2010. He never felt sorry for himself, and never lost his joy in playing with his ball toy, taking his moonlight walks with Marti, chowing down ! and being with us and his very dear friend, 12 1/2 year old Ridgeback princess, Thunder-Alley. When the day came that he could not rise to walk and could not stand on his own when we helped him up, we let him go to the Rainbow Bridge. He was wrapped in his Native Warrior Chief mantle that used to drape over his show crate. The 1st born pup from his mother, Jasmine, he is buried next to her. Special Tribute to Hawkeye: "I've met many dogs in my lifetime -- very few have touched my heart the way the sweet face, personality, and life of Hawkeye did. I feel very blessed to have gotten to know him so well." Hawkeye's veterinarian whom we Thank for all his quality of life these last 22 months Hawkeye's Song: To the tune of the old Disney song Davey Crockett -- "Hawkeye, Hawkeye Puppy, King of My Whole Lab World."
